Thoroughbred Early Education & Starting Under Saddle

At Brookby Heights, we believe the foundations established during a young horse’s first education help shape the horse it becomes for life.

Our approach goes far beyond simply getting a saddle and rider onto a horse. We take the time to develop confidence, understanding, good manners and a willingness to learn — creating strong foundations for the next stage of the horse’s career.

THE RIGHT START

Education, Not Simply Breaking-In

Starting under saddle is a significant process made up of hundreds of small steps.

At Brookby Heights, we do not measure success by how quickly a horse can be saddled and ridden.

Instead, each stage is approached carefully and progressively, allowing the horse time to understand what is being asked and develop confidence in the process.

Every horse is different. Temperament, maturity, previous handling and life experience all influence how a young horse learns.

We adapt the programme to the individual rather than expecting every horse to progress according to the same timetable.

The goal is a young thoroughbred that is not only ridden quietly, but is also confident, well mannered, responsive and ready to continue learning.

Thoughtful Mouthing & Bit Selection

A comfortable horse is better able to relax, understand and learn.

We place a strong emphasis on mouthing and, where appropriate, work alongside an experienced equine dentist. With access to a wide selection of quality bits, we take the time to find an option suited to each horse’s individual mouth, comfort and preferences.

The aim is to establish a soft, confident introduction to the bit and create the foundations for a light, responsive mouth.

Ground Manners That Last

Good ground manners are a cornerstone of our early education programme.

Young horses learn to stand quietly, lead politely, respect personal space, tie up confidently and accept regular handling. They also learn to work independently when asked while remaining relaxed and sociable around other horses.

These foundations help produce a horse that is safer, easier to manage and better prepared for life in a professional training environment.

Teaching Horses to Think

Young horses will encounter unfamiliar environments, pressure and new experiences throughout their careers.

Through round-pen work, extensive handling and carefully managed exposure to new situations, we help horses learn to think rather than simply react.

They develop the ability to process pressure, regain relaxation and approach new challenges with increasing confidence — skills that support them throughout their future training and racing careers.

PROGRESSIVE EDUCATION

From Groundwork to Starting Under Saddle

When a horse has developed the confidence and understanding required to progress, its ridden education begins.

Each new stage is introduced as a natural continuation of the groundwork already established.

Saddling, mounting and the rider’s aids are introduced carefully and progressively, with the horse’s understanding and readiness guiding the pace.

The first ride is not treated as the finish line.

Once a horse accepts a rider quietly, we continue developing its confidence, responsiveness and understanding so that ridden work becomes familiar rather than simply tolerated.

Our aim is to create a horse that moves forward willingly, remains relaxed and begins to understand clear communication between horse and rider.

Developing Balance, Softness & Rideability

At Brookby Heights, education continues well beyond the point where a horse can simply be ridden quietly.

Working in the arena, each horse learns to travel forward in a soft, relaxed way while gradually developing balance, responsiveness and confidence.

Through systematic and progressive education, we encourage the horse to:

  • Work correctly through its body
  • Develop balance on both reins
  • Build natural suppleness
  • Move smoothly through transitions
  • Accept a soft and consistent contact
  • Respond clearly to the rider’s aids
  • Approach new exercises with confidence

This attention to detail helps develop a horse with a more balanced way of going, a lighter and more responsive mouth and the foundations required for continued training.

Foundations for the Next Stage

Whether a horse’s future lies on the racetrack or eventually in another discipline, strong early foundations make every later stage easier.

Our aim is for each young thoroughbred to leave Brookby Heights confident, well mannered and ready to continue its education.

Stay Involved in Your Horse’s Progress

Karen provides regular video updates through Messenger or WhatsApp, allowing owners and trainers to follow their young horse’s progress throughout its stay.

Owners and trainers are also welcome to arrange visits to see the horse working and discuss its development in person.

Because Brookby Heights is intentionally boutique, only a limited number of young horses are accepted at any one time.

There is no fixed programme length — each horse is given the time required to progress confidently and appropriately.
